Chapter Nine

A vampire? A frickin’ vampire?

How could I believe that? I’ve seen Remy eat food. Hell, how could he even be out in the sunlight if that was true? No. He must have read my book. It was the only feasible explanation.

After I entered the double doors into the school hallways, I ducked into the bathroom. I overheard one of the girls from the popular crowd, Jenny, gush about her fool proof tactic on skipping class. With any luck, I would be out of here as soon as the first period bell rang. Now all that was left was the wait.

I checked the time on my phone. 7:48 AM. That meant I had twelve minutes of time to kill.

My stomach twisted in knots. I’ve never, ever broken the rules in such a way before. I felt as if I was stepping over an invisible boundary, like I was turning to the dark side.

Star Wars references again, Ariella? I smiled at myself in the mirror. How in the world could I be so bad and so nerdy at the same time?

I entered one of the empty stalls and clicked the lock closed, before pulling my Book of Shadows out of my bag and flipping through the thick pages. There had to be another entry about vampires here somewhere- not that I truly believed Remy was one of them, anyway.

I remembered reading an entry from my great grandmother’s journal entry, written in the 1940’s. She had a very close relationship to a vampire family in her neighborhood, and it was the closest thing I could find to credible information.

May 1943,

The vampires from the town square helped uncover a mystery today. Holly, one of the elders, has been acting strange. I had felt a shift from light to darkness, but I hadn’t known the cause of my worries. The Manch family had.

They found her, writhing on the floor with dark beings lapping at her offerings of blood. A blood offering to those beasts meant only one thing, dark and terrible exchanges of power.

A battle ensued, but the vampires overpowered poor Marcella. The old wench never had a chance. The blood consumers may have helped us today, but tomorrow might be different. They will continue to be monitored, guarded by the watchful eye of Pan.

Yuletide is coming, and the cold, endless winter has returned. I only hope that the vampires don’t require a prize for their duties to our kind. Such tricky beings, those vampires. But in the end, aren’t we all?

-Alvilda Rae"

I slammed the book closed. Well, that certainly didn’t help me much. However, my curiosity was peaked. I knew at least one of my searches at the library would be about vampires, now that my best friend might potentially be one.

You’re bleeding, Ariella. The words rang back to me. The double meaning screamed loudly to me now, but I wouldn’t accept it. Not yet. Not until I faced Remy again and found out the whole truth.

The bell sounded, causing my heart to jump in my chest.
